Countering the Cuts Myths

Red Pepper, the campaigning magazine has produced a great guide to countering the myths around the necessity for cuts in public expenditure that is now becoming accepted dogma amongst a large number of people, following an ideological on-slaught by the government and right-wing thinktanks and poundits. The guide can be downloaded from: http://taxpayersalliance.org/files/cutsmyths.pdf

The guide addresses myths such as:

  • "Government debt is the highest we have ever had"
  • "The UK’s debt crisis is one of the worst in the world"
  • "Government debt is ‘unsustainable"
  • "The government shouldn’t get into debt, just as your own household shouldn’t"
  • "Public spending got ‘out of control’ under Labour"
  • "Spending on the public sector is ‘crowding out’ private sector growth"
  • "Cutting public spending will help us avoid economic disaster"
